Overview Our
parishFrom the Greek 'paroikos': neighbourhood
area makes up the northern part of Brighton. The rolling green of the Downs are
to the north beyond the A27. The A23 from London and Gatwick Airport passes between
Patcham and Westdene and leads south through the middle suburbs to
the centre of Brighton, and the sea.
The area has 5,500 or so homes, mostly family detached or semi-detached houses, but with
a good number of flats along the A23. The population is
8-10,000, and has an age profile similar to the UK average, with 23%
under 20, 52% 20-60, and 25% over 60. The average age is 41. 51% are married, and we're
predominantly ethnically 'white' (96% - UK: 91%). 67% say they are Christian,
and about 5% are active in a local church. 21% have 'no religion'. 64% are employed, with 16%
retired.
Church presence: Other churches share in the Christian presence in the area,
including St Thomas More (Roman Catholic)
and Patcham Methodist.
Other Guides: The local paper has a brief guide to the area, and lists school contact numbers.
'My Brighton and Hove' provides a brief history of
Patcham,
and of Westdene.
Transport: We are served by regular bus services from central
Brighton. Road access is straightforward, but parking everywhere is limited. A Park & Ride operates
from Withdean Stadium,
where there is more parking, (except on days when Brighton & Hove Albion football
team, who use the stadium, play at home (fixtures)).
The nearest main-line station is Preston Park.
Accommodation: Check out the Youth Hostel or Preston Park Hotel or if you are planning to stay longer: Estate Agents!
Popular activities: Many people enjoy walking or biking on the Downs,
and visiting other parts of Sussex. The shopping
and cultural delights(!) of Brighton are also close at hand. The sea is enjoyed for
sailing, windsurfing and swimming. Withdene stadium provides tennis, squash and gym
facilities.
